Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder that causes gradual loss of memory, perception, language, reasoning, and the ability to care for oneself.
Currently, an estimated 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease; by mid-century, this could triple to 16 million.
An estimated 1 in 10 persons over age 65 and nearly half of those 85 and older have Alzheimer’s disease. A small percentage develop symptoms as young as 30.
It is estimated that one to four family members care for each person with the disease.
Alzheimer’s disease is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.
