Why is AFA Asking Participants to Stand Up?

We are asking participants to stand with us in silence — rather than run, jump, hop or skip — to symbolize the quiet that envelops individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, and because it is a simple yet powerful way for people of all ages and capabilities to get involved and demonstrate their support for families affected by this brain disorder.

We believe it takes courage and conviction to demand that the nation focus its attention on the needs of the dementia community. The time is now, as our nation faces a projected three-fold increase in the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease by mid-century. By standing together in “caring for our nation,” our goal is for this compelling event to serve as a catalyst for change and action.

Individuals who are unable to stand will be provided with a flag that they can attach to their chairs to signify that they stand tall on this issue as well.
